Testing the pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels gives you a nice and clear starting point. Ideally, your pH should sit between 7.2 and 7.6, and alkalinity should range from 80–120 ppm.

Unbalanced pH levels can stop chlorine from working properly, allowing algae to grow. If your pH is too high, use a pH reducer to bring it down before moving forward.

Step 2: Shock the Pool Hard

Shocking the pool with a high dose of chlorine is one of the fastest ways to kill algae and bacteria.

Depending on how green the water is, you may need to double or even triple the usual dose. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully and let your pump and filter run continuously to spread the chemicals evenly.

If the pool still looks cloudy after shocking, don’t worry—that’s normal and will clear up as the filter runs.

Step 4: Keep the Pump and Filter Running

To clear the water completely, run your pool pump and filter 24/7 until the water is crystal clear.

Check the filter regularly and clean it as needed. A clogged filter won’t work properly and will slow down the cleaning process.

If the filter gets overloaded, backwash or clean it to keep the water flowing smoothly.

Step 5: Use an Algaecide for Extra Protection

Once the water starts looking clear, adding an algaecide provides extra protection. It helps kill any leftover spores and prevents algae from coming back.

For ongoing maintenance, algaecide can be added regularly to keep your pool algae-free.

Finally, test your water one more time to make sure the pH, chlorine, and alkalinity levels are where they should be.
